Five Fat Sausages

A raw, funny, and deeply human memoir about survival, reinvention, and reclaiming joy.

About the author

Pam Wood lives in a suburb of Naarm in Melbourne, on the land of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people. She is an emerging author, performer, and red-level neurodiverse extrovert whose work explores identity, trauma, and the long process of reclaiming one’s voice.

Pam has spent much of her life adapting to who others needed her to be. She is no longer interested in that. As she puts it, “I am Pam, just as I am.”
In October 2024, Pam made her artistic debut at the Melbourne Fringe Festival, performing five shows of her hour-long solo work Dys-Order-Ed. Her writing and performance are marked by honesty, humour, and a refusal to smooth the edges of lived experience.

What readers are saying about Five Fat Sausages:

From the very first page, Pam invites you into her world with energy, humour, and raw vulnerability. It’s a breath of fresh air, funny, heartbreaking and fiercely real.

One of the funniest, saddest, open, life-changing books I have read in a very long time … an irreverent look at how many of us cope with life’s challenges and a reminder that there is always hope, even in the darkest moments.

Pam’s debut show, Dys-Order-Ed, performed at the 2024 Melbourne Fringe Festival and based on stories from her life, is available to watch here.

As a first-time performer at 67, Pam is a natural, and has rich life experience to draw from. With charisma and humour we traverse the highs and visceral lows, the fleeting moments of control followed by disarray and the cruelties of medical and legal systems that willingly fail to ‘see’ her … Wood emerges triumphant to reclaim herself, her diagnoses, her sexuality, her hard-won freedom.
